Essay general strike

When asked to write an essay general strike, there are many general strikes that one can choose to write about but the most common general strike that man students decide to write about is the 1926 general strike that occurred in Great Britain.

When writing about this strike, one may decide to investigate the extent to which Trade Unions contributed to the general strike. The year 1926 was for Britain, a year of great industrial turmoil that was characterized by a great deal of civil unrest. The causes of these disturbances were the general state of the government and the economic downtown that Britain was experiencing at that time.

Much of the unrest occurred in the mining industry which was very notorious for mistreating its workers and also because it was the industry that took most of the hit from the economic downturn. The economic downturn saw the demand of coal reduce and this caused the price of coal to also drop significantly.

Before this period, the coal industry was booming with business and profits. This period of turbulence between the owners of the mines and the miners reached a maximum at the beginning of March 1926 at which point, the miners from all parts of Britain participated in the general strike that had been called by the trade unions and prompted by the unfortunate actions of the mine owners to lock the miners in their mines two days following the collapse of negotiations between the two parties.

The main trigger of the general strike was thought to be the trade unions which seemed rather unprepared to handle the strike that they had called for.
