Poetry of Auden

Fall of Icarus by Breughel
About suffering they were never wrong,
The antiquated Masters; how well, they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
speckle someone else is eating or opening a windowpane or just walking dully along;
How, when the age are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there unceasingly must be
Children who did not specially compulsion it to happen, skate
On a pond at the edge of the timber:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must fall out its course
Anyhow in a corner, some ungroomed spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturers clam
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughels Icarus, for grammatical case: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important trouble; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the unripened
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must bring forth seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to stay to and sailed calmly on.

well-nigh THE POEM:
meaning:
