History
The history of the Juarez Cartel can be traced back as far as early as the 1980s (LaFranchi, 1999). Cocaine use and demand had peaked and suddenly, the Columbian Cartels found themselves in the middle of a major crackdown from U.S. and Mexican authorities (LaFranchi, 1999). Amado Carrillo Fuentes took advantage of the Columbian trades softness to move narcotics as freely as they were once able and began amassing his own empire.
The Juarez Cartel soon took control of a commodious territory extending from Mexico and into the United States.
At the time, Juarez City was the primary constitute of operation, but quickly Carrillo Fuentes had gained control of Mexico City, Buenos Aires and even Santiago, Chile; not to mention a strong foothold in Los Angeles and Texas (LaFranchi, 1999). In 1996, after receiving heated pressure from U.S. and Mexican authorities, Carrillo Fuentes was forced to relocate his primary base of operations to Santiago, Chile. He still however, managed to celebrate smaller cells in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Cuba (LaFranchi, 1999).
Many considered Amado Carrillo Fuentes to be particularly burnished and visionary in that he no longer valued to use boats and prop planes as means of transporting his narcotics.
