Syrias Government
Syria, during this point in time, has not been a stable country. Syria has had coup after coup during the 1960s. Finally, in 1966, a group of army officers had President Hafiz put in prison and made numerous changes to the government including changing the Baath Party beliefs to fit their region. Nureddin al-Atassi became the President of Syria, but more as a show-piece. All the major power was held by salaah Jadid, Deputy General Secretary.



The government was finally stabilized in 1970 when the father of the current leader of Syria, Hafez al-Assad, took full control of Syria by ousting Jadid.
Syria tried to align itself with other Arab Nations and other communistic governments. In 1958, Syria aligned themselves with Egypt to create the Northern Province of the united Arab Republic. This relationship never amounted to what the Syrians had hoped it would. Syrians were not treated as equals in the new republic, but more like second coterie citizens of Egypt.
