Antiracism - From Legislation to Education

Role of legislation
The Equal Opportunity Act of southeastern Australia (1984) makes specific provisions to prohibit racist discrimination within the public arena - including in education and employment. The South Australian Education Department antiracism policy (1990) was developed as the fashion model for eliminating racism from the working and learning environments for which it is responsible, thereby meeting its legislative obligations, as a major education service provider and employer. The Act was an important catalyst for change within the department. The situation that the policy had a legislative basis, gave it credibility among educators and community groups.

For the purposes of this Act, a per son discriminates against a nonher on the ground of pelt along:
(a) if he or she treats another person unfavorably by reason of the others race
