After their victory in the Bolshevik Revolution and the subsequent formation of the Soviet heart in 1922, the Soviets nationalized Rands fathers pharmacy, and gave it to the people, leaving her family with nothing and no options but to flee to the countryside. despite the oppression she suffered in her youth, Rand went on to write many important novels, such as We the Living, an almost autobiographical story that follows a young woman, Kira Argounov, as she experiences the trials that befall a bourgeois citizen in Soviet Russia. Similar to Rand, Kira lost much during the Revolution and begins the rough struggle of individual verses state in this classic fib that demonstrates the evil of totalitarianism.

These two women, one real and the other a reflection of her past, depart upon a journey, in which by fetching action, pursuing their own happiness and relying upon themselves, they can accomplish their goals. Rands beliefs in objective perception of reality, rational self-interest, and reason as the basic faculty of knowledge, led to her construction of the novel We the Living, which understandably illustrates the effects of her childhood on her personality and philosophy.
