Mrs. Dalloway autobiographical hints

Mrs. Dalloway autobiographical hints come from the published materials of Victoria Woolf. Flashback is majorly used literary stylistic device in the book. The events of the book takes place in a day specified as June 15th 1923. The hints of Dalloway autobiography hoover around two unconnected storylines during the same day.

Dalloway is in her fifty’s and is recuperating from an illness which has taken her down for some while. Dalloway is in a jovial mood and prepares to host a party that evening, and thus she goes to buy flowers in preparation for the party. During this occasion, Clarissa reflects thirty years ago that on such a period she made her decisions clear that she won’t marry Peter Walsh, her persistent suitor and rather chooses to go with Richard Dalloway. This claims to be the first part of the story line.

The second section of the story line focuses on Septimus; an individual who participated in World War I and suffers from shell shocker disease where he experiences hallucinations following the death of his dear friend Evans in the war. Septimus is with his wife Lucrazia in the park where he hears the voices of other individuals in the park and claims that life has no meaning. Sir William Bradshaw is Septimus doctor who suggests for the asylum.

Meanwhile Peter Welsh visits Clarissa on a short notice which ends when Clarissa’s daughter arrives. The evening party has low turnout with majority of individuals being people of Clarissa’s past including Peter. Richard Dalloway is unable to tell Clarissa that he loves her, something he hasn’t said for a long time. Bradshaw arrives late only to tell that Septimus had committed suicide.
